Motorists on Route 11-15 in the Hummels Wharf and Shamokin Dam areas will notice more truck traffic than usual in February and March. The reason: 225,000 cubic yards of dirt is being moved from the Susquehanna Valley Mall to land owned by Pennsylvania Power & Light Co.
The dirt is being removed as part of an expansion project at the mall. PP&L is stockpiling the dirt to use as fill for future construction projects at its Sunbury power plant. The two parties are splitting the costs of excavation and hauling.
"This arrangement saves both PP&L and the mall a considerable amount of money," said Robert E. Ruffaner, PP&L's Sunbury area community development director. "It's a win-win situation."
Ruffaner said a temporary traffic light has been installed on Route 11-15 south of Stetler Road to help traffic flow in the area.
