PP&L Resources Elects New Director

ALLENTOWN, Pa.---Marilyn Ware Lewis, chairman of American Water Works Company, Inc., has been elected to the PP&L Resources, Inc. (NYSE: PPL), board of directors, effective Jan. 1.

Lewis, who also is a director of Penn Fuel Gas, Inc., will serve a term that runs through April 1998.

American Water Works, based in Voorhees, N.J., is the nation's largest regulated water utility company. Lewis has served as its chairman since 1988 and on its board of directors since 1982. Lewis and her family have a longtime shareholding in American Water Works and are majority owners of the stock of Penn Fuel Gas.

PP&L Resources announced plans to acquire Penn Fuel Gas in June. Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission approval of the acquisition is pending.

Since 1994, Lewis has served as a member of the board of the American Enterprise Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank. She also is a board member of the Eisenhower Exchange Fellowship, an organization chaired by former President Bush that provides a forum for international business and community leaders.

A Lancaster, Pa., resident who is a freelance writer, former editor and public relations consultant, Lewis was the original chair of the Tom Ridge for Governor Committee. She also is the former president of the Solanco Publishing Co., the publisher of the Sun Ledger in Quarryville, Pa., and former president of KLS Educational Systems, Inc., specialized educational consultants.

She is a founding member of the Lancaster Farmland Trust and the Janus School, as well as a member of the advisory group for the Lancaster Shelter for Abused Women.

Lewis also serves on the boards of directors of CIGNA Corp.; the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business and Industry; Pennsylvanians for Effective Government; and the University of Pennsylvania Health System and School of Medicine.

She attended American University and the University of Pennsylvania.

As the result of her election Wednesday, Lewis also will serve as a director of PP&L Resources' largest subsidiary, PP&L, Inc., the Allentown-based company that provides electricity delivery services to 1.2 million customers in central and eastern Pennsylvania and generates and sells electricity throughout Pennsylvania and 17 other states.

PP&L Resources also is the parent company of PP&L Global, an international independent power company; and PP&L Spectrum, which markets energy-related services and products.

Lewis' appointment brings the total number of PP&L Resources and PP&L, Inc., board members to 12.
