Pennsylvania Power & Light Co. has planned an emergency response drill for Saturday morning (4/26) at the Martins Creek power plant in Lower Mount Bethel Township.
The drill will test the ability of PP&L, its oil spill response contractor, and local volunteer fire and ambulance organizations to react quickly and effectively to an oil spill emergency at the power plant.
PP&L will simulate oil spill, fire and first aid emergencies during the drill, said James A. Burns, PP&L's community development director for Northampton County. People who live near the plant will hear sirens, and may see emergency vehicles and a medical helicopter going to the plant as part of the drill.
"We are working with the Blue Mountain Control Center and local fire companies and ambulance corps to conduct a realistic test of our ability to respond to an emergency," Burns said. "The support of these groups is important to the success of our emergency response. We appreciate their willingness to work with us on the drill."
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency requires PP&L to conduct an oil spill response drill at the Martins Creek plant once every three years.
Burns said the drill will start after 9 a.m. and be completed by noon.
