PP&L to Host Ukrainian Electric Company Officials

Four officials from Kievenergo, an electric company from Ukraine, are coming to Pennsylvania Power & Light Co. the week of March 25 to learn more about electric utility regulation and how rates are established.

PP&L and Kievenergo are partners in a cooperative agreement under the U.S. Energy Association's Energy Industry Partnership Program, which is supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development. The program's purpose is to help energy companies from former Soviet republics gain an understanding of free-market economic principles.

On Tuesday (3/26), the Ukrainians will travel to Harrisburg to meet with officials from the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission. PUC Chairman John M. Quain will welcome the visitors.

Also, the Ukrainians will visit the Steamtown National Historic Site in Scranton on Thursday morning (3/28). They will tour the facility's new hot and chilled water plant, operated by Community Central Energy Corp.

On the final day of the visit, Friday (3/29), the Ukrainians will tour the modern research facility at the Electrotechnology Applications Center, a joint project of PP&L and Northampton Community College in Bethlehem

PP&L and Kievenergo are in the third year of their partnership agreement. Several groups from Kievenergo have visited PP&L to learn about various aspects of the electric utility industry in the United States and PP&L employees have conducted business seminars in Ukraine.

Kievenergo is one of eight regional electric companies in Ukraine. It serves the 9 million people who live in the area around Ukraine's capital city of Kiev.
