Pennsylvania Power & Light Co. is a sponsor of the 1996 U.S. Olympic Team cycling trials June 4-9 at the Lehigh County Velodrome — an event in which the nation's best cyclists will compete for the chance to represent the United States at the Olympic Games in Atlanta.
PP&L has signed on as a corporate marketing partner of the bicycle racing facility near Allentown for the entire 1996 season.
"By supporting events like the Olympic cycling trials, PP&L can say 'thank you' to its customers and communities, while helping enhance the quality of life in our service territory," said Raymond F. Suhocki, vice president of Marketing and Economic Development.
"This event also will have significant economic development benefits for the region," Suhocki said. "For a few days, the national spotlight will be focused on this area, and PP&L is proud to help make that happen."
About 200 athletes from around the nation will compete at the Lehigh County Velodrome for one of 11 spots on the U.S. Olympic Cycling Team. The velodrome, located in Trexlertown, has been hosting amateur and professional cycling events for more than 20 years.
"PP&L is an important part of our community's economic, social and cultural life," said Lehigh County Executive Jane S. Baker. "We are delighted that PP&L has signed on as a corporate sponsor for the Olympic trials."
