PP&L Posts Transmission Rates for Wholesale Energy on Internet

In a move that will allow wholesale buyers of electricity to acquire useful information, Pennsylvania Power & Light Co. has posted its transmission rates for wholesale energy on the company's Internet site.

The information gives wholesale electricity customers quick access to PP&L rates for a variety of transmission services and charges.

"This information is useful to those customers who can shop for electricity and will need to use PP&L transmission lines to move the power," said John Sipics, PP&L's general manager of Power Systems Support. "Using the Internet is an excellent way for PP&L to provide a service to anyone who needs this information and to enhance competition in the wholesale market."

The information does not apply to retail customers who buy electricity for homes, businesses and industries.

A wholesale electricity customer is one that buys electricity in bulk and then distributes it to other customers. The most typical wholesale customers are other electric utilities, municipalities and electric marketers or brokers.

PP&L posted the information on the Internet in response to a recent ruling by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission that makes sweeping changes to promote competition in the wholesale electricity market.

Unlike retail electricity customers, wholesale purchasers of power can shop for an energy supplier. Those customers then have to pay owners of transmission lines to transmit the power.

"Posting the transmission rates allows a purchaser to determine quickly the cost benefit of a possible energy purchase," Sipics said. "The cost of transmitting electricity, much like the cost of transporting a product by train, truck or ship, is an integral part of a business decision."

The address of the PP&L Resources, Inc. Internet site is http://www.papl.com.

In addition to the energy transmission information, the site includes other company information, news releases and a message from PP&L Resources, Inc. Chairman Bill Hecht.
