PP&L Names New Susquehanna Plant Manager; Rotates Other Management Responsibilities

George J. Kuczynski of Bloomsburg has been named to the newly created position of manager of the Susquehanna nuclear plant by Pennsylvania Power & Light Co.

The creation of the plant manager position is part of a series of changes in management responsibilities in the utility's Nuclear Department that are designed to give key employees an opportunity to develop knowledge and leadership experience in additional areas.

"Making these changes enhances the skills of the people in responsible management positions at our nuclear plant, further ensuring the plant's safe and reliable operation," said Herb Woodeshick, PP&L's special assistant to the president.

In his new role, Kuczynski, who has been PP&L's manager-Nuclear Plant Services since 1993, will focus on operations and maintenance of the two-unit plant. He will report to Gene Stanley, vice president-Nuclear Operations, who had been responsible for operations and maintenance along with other corporate management duties.

"The appointment of George Kuczynski to the plant manager position reflects his proven leadership skills in a variety of positions, as well as his well-recognized philosophy regarding safe operation of our nuclear generating units," Woodeshick said.

A graduate of Lehigh University with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, Kuczynski is studying for a master's degree in business administration at Bloomsburg University. He is a registered professional engineer in Pennsylvania and has earned a senior reactor operator's license from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

Kuczynski joined PP&L in 1974 as an engineer involved in the start-up and testing of the utility's oil-fired generating units at the Martins Creek Plant in Northampton County. He moved to the Susquehanna Plant project in the late '70s to assist in the start-up of Unit 1. Since then he has progressed through engineering and maintenance supervisory and management positions at the nuclear plant.

He is a member of the American Nuclear Society and the Bloomsburg Area YMCA, and he is the cubmaster of Cub Pack 20 in Lightstreet and serves as a coach in Little League baseball and elementary school basketball.

Kuczynski and his wife Mary Jo have three sons.
