Fuel Oil Leak Contained at Power Plant Fish Farm Site

A leak of heating fuel oil at the Susquehanna Aquacultures Inc. fish farm site on the property of Pennsylvania Power & Light Co.'s Brunner Island plant has been contained and cleanup is under way.

The leak was discovered Wednesday (1/24) when oil was observed floating on flood waters now covering the fish farm area. The fish farm area, which is surrounded by a 20-foot high dike, was flooded Friday (1/19) when the Susquehanna River overflowed its banks.

"All of the fish were lost during the weekend flooding," said Nicholas M. Dininni, PP&L's Harrisburg area community development director. "The fish farm area remains under 10 feet of water left behind when the river receded."

The oil leak apparently is in a pipe leading from an underground oil storage tank to a building on the fish farm site. About 50 gallons of oil has leaked from the pipe, Dininni said. The tank has a 2,000-gallon capacity and was about half-full when the leak occurred. The cause of the leak has not been determined.

"We have contained the spilled oil with booms, and are assessing the best method to stop the leak. No oil was released to the river." Dininni added. Global Spill Management Inc. of King of Prussia will assist in the cleanup, which will continue around the clock.

The utility has notified the state Department of Environmental Protection.

Susquehanna Aquacultures Inc., an independent company, operates the fish farm, growing hybrid striped bass and catfish for commercial sale in water heated by the waste heat created during operation of the power plant.
