The Lehigh Valley Peregrine Project will present two information sessions on peregrine falcons in Allentown next week to coincide with the arrival of falcon hatchlings on the Pennsylvania Power & Light Co. building at Ninth and Hamilton streets. The sessions will be held at noon Wednesday, June 14, and 7 p.m. Thursday, June 15, at the Allentown Hilton, Ninth and Hamilton streets.
Environmental educators from the Wildlands Conservancy will provide information on the peregrine falcon and the community project to bring them to Allentown. A coalition of environmental, business and community groups in the Lehigh Valley launched the project to bring the endangered birds to Downtown Allentown.
The project is part of the Pennsylvania Game Commission's efforts to re-establish the birds in the state. The afternoon session is scheduled to accommodate employees who work downtown. Both sessions are free and open to the public.
The first three peregrine hatchlings will arrive at Lehigh Valley International Airport June 12 via Northwest Airlines. They will be transported to a "hack" box on the outside parapet of the 23rd floor of the PP&L Building. The birds will be raised in the box until they are mature enough to fly at about 45 days old. At that time, the hack box will be opened. Food will continue to be supplied until the young falcons are able to fly and adequately feed themselves.
A falcon hotline is available where people can call to leave questions or comments on the project and, eventually, report peregrine falcon sightings. The number is 1-800-354-8383.
