Pennsylvania Power & Light Co. offers these energy-saving tips for holiday lighting:
-- Use inside window candles instead of traditional outdoor lights. Window candles consume less electricity.
-- Use lower-wattage bulbs such as miniature tree lights inside and avoid the use of high-wattage spotlights outside. Lower-wattage bulbs create less heat and consume less electricity.
-- Turn lights out before leaving your home or before going to bed. Automatic timers can come in handy.
Above all, if you're saying "Season's Greetings" to your family, friends and neighbors with holiday lighting, keep safety in mind:
-- Check all light strings for defective insulation, sockets or plugs. If in doubt, discard them rather than risk a fire.
-- Keep lights clear of window curtains, flammable decorations or metal.
-- Look for the Underwriters Laboratory (UL) seal on all indoor and outdoor decorations you buy.
-- Don't overload household circuits or room receptacles.
-- Fasten outdoor lights and electrical decorations in place with insulated staples; never use nails or tacks.
-- Use insulated tape around the connecting joints of outside light sets to keep out water.
-- Keep ladders away from power lines.
-- Don't install or change outdoor lights in wet weather.
-- Use weatherproof outdoor lights and grounded (3-prong) extension cords for outdoor decorating.
