PP&L Warns Customers About Possible Telephone Scam

Pennsylvania Power & Light Co. has issued a warning that bogus telephone solicitations have been reported by customers in various parts of the utility's service area.

PP&L received several calls Thursday and Friday (8/17 & 8/18) from customers in Allentown and Williamsport seeking verification that the telephone call they had received was from the utility. In one case the caller allegedly was marketing a power-interruption notification device. In another, the caller reportedly was doing a customer satisfaction survey.

"PP&L does not have any telemarketing programs under way at this time," said Bernard J. Bujnowski, PP&L's manager-Customer Contact Operations.

"If you receive a telephone call from someone claiming to represent PP&L, ask for a name and phone number where you can return the call, hang up and call 1-800-342-5775 to verify the caller is from PP&L," Bujnowski said.

"For your own protection, don't give out personal information such as your income or your credit card or social security numbers without verifying the caller's identity."
