Programs & Workshops
PPL's Montour Preserve has been committed to environmental education and interpretive programs since the preserve's inception in the 1970s. Educational programs are offered to teachers, school students, youth groups and the public.
Our programs include:
Natural history: Guided walks; talks about plants, animals or some specific aspect of the environment; and butterfly and bird counts.
Cultural history: Programs about Native Americans, local history and various cultural views of our natural heritage.
Outdoor skills: Programs on using map and compass, fishing, boating safety and the Pennsylvania Game Commission's hunter safety course.
Teacher workshops: An annual one-day Teaching Environmental Awareness workshop brings a respected environmental educator to the preserve to offer teaching tips and techniques. Other workshops focus on specific natural resources in a more intensive, field-oriented, two-day format. Workshops are linked to the Pennsylvania Department of Education's Environment and Ecology Standards.
School field trips: Thousands of students visit the preserve annually. Field trips must be scheduled in advance by calling 570-437-3131 or by writing pplpreserves@pplweb.com.
Programs for youth groups: Scouts, 4-H and other youth groups can work on badge requirements and other activities at the preserve.
College internships: The preserve offers practical experience to college students interested in environmental education/interpretation or resource management. If interested in an internship, send a resume and cover letter to Montour Preserve.
