Air Sampling Results
Air sampling was conducted Sept. 12-16 by TCI Environmental IH consultants for total dust and arsenic. Analysis was done by an American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) certified laboratory, Galson Laboratories, East Syracuse, N.Y.
Daily sample locations Sept. 12-16 included:
- New Jersey riverfront.
- Pennsylvania riverfront at cleanup area (PPL Boat Launch).
- Guard shack just above cleanup area.
- Intersection of Depues and Depues Ferry roads.
Laboratory results for samples conducted Monday through Friday (Sept. 12-16) are as follows below. These are the overall "gross" results from the laboratory without specific sample locations and times. TCI will prepare a report that details specific airborne results with sample locations.
Arsenic airborne levels were all found to be "None Detected" at less than 0.3 or 0.4 micrograms per cubic meter (ug/m3).
- The industry OSHA limit for arsenic is 10 ug/m3.
- The federal Environmental Protection agency has Reference Dose (RfD) values for chemicals. The RfD provides hazard guidelines for oral and airborne risk in terms of mg/kg-day.
- In the case of airborne arsenic, EPA has no published reference dose value. Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has no airborne limit for arsenic.
Total dust samples ranged between "None Detected" (less than 0.05 milligrams/ cubic meter of air, mg/m3) and 0.24 mg/m3.
- The customary airborne limit in industry is 10 mg/m3 for non-toxic dusts.
