Shuman Point Natural Area

This woodland is one of the last undeveloped areas around Lake Wallenpaupack. Before the lake was formed in 1926, parts of Shuman Point were farmed. Now this 300 acres of woodland is a natural area set aside by PPL for the public’s enjoyment.

The Blue Trail starts as an old road which at one time was the main route for transportation to what was earlier known as Wilsonville Village. The trail parallels most of the shoreline. The hiker will also notice a variety of trees and wild flowers throughout the wooded area. Chestnut, oak, white pine, red maple and white oak are the common trees. American chestnut sprouts can be found.

Shuman Point hosts a variety of wildlife. The hiker may encounter squirrels, turkey, grouse, white tail deer and black bear.

Hunting is NOT permitted. Camping, picnicking, fire-building, ATV's, snowmobiles and other motorized vehicles are prohibited. A parking area is located on Route 590.

Adjacent to Shuman Point Area is the 60-acre Beech House Creek Wildlife Refuge.
