Relicensing PPL's Lake Wallenpaupack Hydroelectric Project
In July 2005, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission renewed PPL's operating license for the Lake Wallenwaupack Hydroelectric Project.
The lake, dam and generating units have been in operation since 1926 in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania.
In addition to its capacity to generate 44 megawatts of electricity, the 5,700-acre man-made lake plays a critical role in regional water management and is a popular location for year-round outdoor recreation.
The five-year relicensing process included:
- A formal application to FERC.
- A comprehensive environmental assessment.
- Extensive community outreach, which allowed us to gain a clear understanding any concerns and to seek innovative resolutions.
The result is a license that ensures a balance among Lake Wallenpaupack’s many uses — electricity generation, recreation, flood control, drought management and environmental conservation — for the next 40 years.
