PPL Renewable Energy
Energy, plus a whole lot more

At PPL Renewable Energy, we’re helping our customers harness the power in wind, sunlight, biomass and biogas.

We’re generating clean, reliable and renewable energy while saving our customers money.

Our projects produce energy with low or no carbon dioxide emissions. Our landfill methane projects actually produce energy while reducing emissions of methane gas, which is many times more potent than carbon dioxide in contributing to global climate change. These projects are the equivalent of planting tens of thousands of acres of trees or removing thousands of cars from the road.

PPL Renewable Energy is a subsidiary of PPL Corporation, which has a long history of generating energy in an environmentally responsible manner.

PPL Renewable Energy funds, develops, constructs, owns, operates and markets the energy and environmental attributes of its renewable energy plants as a “one-stop” solution for its customers. (Currently, PPL Renewable Energy develops, builds, owns and operates green power projects only for commercial, industrial and institutional customers.)

Already, about 10 percent of the energy marketed by PPL comes from renewable sources.

Solar
Rooftop or ground-mounted solar panels can significantly reduce energy bills by generating electricity during the daytime or “peak” hours when power prices are highest.

Existing projects:

  • Two Macy’s Department Stores in New Jersey
  • Pennsauken Renewable Energy Park in New Jersey

Wind
We’ve only begun to tap the potential for wind power generation.
Pennsylvania alone has enough wind power potential to provide electricity for nearly 5 million homes, according to Pennsylvania Gov. Edward Rendell.

As we develop wind projects, PPL buys the output of two existing wind farms in Pennsylvania:

  • Bear Creek Wind Farm, a 24-megawatt project near Wilkes-Barre, which began commercial operation in March 2006.
  • Locust Ridge Wind Farm, a 26-megawatt installation in Mahanoy City, which began producing power commercially in March 2007.

Biogas
Sanitary landfills are an ideal source of methane, which is generated from decomposition of trash. Our projects capture this gas, creating a double benefit – it’s not vented into the atmosphere as a greenhouse gas, and it fuels power generation engines.

One of our projects, the Frey Farm landfill in Lancaster County, Pa., was named a 2006 project of the year by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Landfill Methane Outreach Program.

Existing projects:

  • Pennsauken Renewable Energy Park (Pennsauken, N.J.)
  • Northern Tier Solid Waste Authority Landfill (Burlington, Pa.)
  • Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority - Frey Farm Landfill (Conestoga, Pa.)
  • Greater Lebanon Refuse Authority Landfill (Lebanon, Pa.)
  • Cumberland County Improvement Authority Landfill (Deerfield Township, N.J.)

Biomass
PPL Renewable Energy is developing biomass projects that will turn wood and agricultural waste into clean and reliable energy.

Cogeneration
The generation of electricity and the capture and use of waste heat from the generator is a money-saving solution for customers who have a need for power and thermal energy. PPL Renewable Energy has developed cogeneration projects using various leading edge technologies.

Existing projects:

  • United Water (Haworth, N.J.)
  • The Hill at Whitemarsh (Lafayette Hill, Pa.)
  • Sheraton Edison Hotel (Edison, N.J.)
  • Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers (New York City)
  • Sheraton Parsippany Hotel (Parsippany, N.Y.)
  • Pepperidge Farm (Bloomfield, Conn.)
  • Ocean County College (Toms River, N.J.)
