Holtwood 2010 Project

Welcome. PPL has developed this Web site to provide information about a proposed expansion of the Holtwood hydroelectric project on the Susquehanna River in Lancaster and York counties in Pennsylvania. Holtwood has been a source of clean, renewable electricity for nearly a century.

PPL has applied to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for an amendment and extension of the Holtwood operating license. PPL’s proposed changes include new turbines to increase the amount of electricity Holtwood can generate and modifications to improve migratory fish passage past the Holtwood dam.

Once federal, state and local approvals are received, PPL plans to begin construction in 2009 with generation operations scheduled to start in 2012.

The expansion would add 125 megawatts of electricity generating capacity to the plant – enough to power 100,000 homes. This clean, renewable energy would be a significant addition to the state’s renewable generation capacity, and expands PPL’s commitment to invest in renewable energy projects in the commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

In addition to the renewable energy it generates, Holtwood provides recreational and economic benefits to the lower Susquehanna Valley. To protect the land surrounding the hydroelectric project, PPL has agreed to transfer ownership of 3,500 acres as part of a public-private initiative for preservation.
