Urey Overlook Trail

The Urey Overlook Trail leads to a scenic vista that offers a spectacular view of Lake Aldred, the lake formed by the Holtwood dam, and the forest-covered hills along the Susquehanna River.

The trail and overlook are nestled in a quiet part of southeastern York County in Lower Chanceford Township. Pennsylvania Water & Power Co. (a predecessor of PPL) purchased the property from the Urey family in the early 1900s as part of its Holtwood Hydroelectric Project. Later, Glatfelter Pulp Wood Co. bought land, including what is now known as the overlook, from the utility company. In the late 1960s, both companies agreed to maintain the pristine overlook and preserve a short foot trail to the site.

To reach Urey Overlook, follow Route 425 east from Airville to Otter Creek Recreation Area. Park there and continue on Route 425 on foot and pick up the blue trail blazes to the overlook.
