General Information

The Holtwood Environmental Preserve provides lakeside recreational opportunities and facilities for camping, hiking, picnicking, boating, sightseeing, fishing and hunting on more than 5,000 acres on both shores of the lower Susquehanna River in Lancaster and York Counties. The Holtwood hydroelectric plant and Lake Aldred demonstrate the successful combination of power generation, recreation, environmental education and land management.

Butterflies

Volunteers and staff at the preserve have created an extensive demonstration butterfly garden at the preserve, which also serves as a certified Monarch Way Station. The preserve also hosts annual butterfly counts for southern Lancaster County.

Eagle Watch

The eagles have returned once again to Holtwood. This is the 10th year a pair of eagles have nested on a transmission tower here. Let's continue to watch to see if the eagles produce the 23rd eaglet at our environmental preserve. For a progress report on the 2009 nest, click here.
