PPL Corporation has been issuing comprehensive reports on environmental performance since 1993. In 2002, these reports were expanded to include information about PPL's community responsibility. In 1997, PPL endorsed the Ceres Principles and began issuing a yearly Ceres performance report.

In 2005, PPL began work to combine all of those reports into one document that described the sustainability performance of the corporation. Combining PPL Corporation’s environmental, community and financial information into one report was a significant step forward in assessing the sustainability of our business practices. It also was a challenging task.

After discussions with Ceres and with its encouragement, PPL began to compile, analyze and verify data from business lines on three continents. Many organizations and individuals within the company contributed information on the environment, financial performance, employment, industrial and public safety, community affairs, customer service and more.

An outline was created based on the Global Reporting Initiative’s GRI-2 guidelines. As the information came in, it was organized and compiled into charts and graphics. The report began to take shape.

After evaluating reporting guidelines and reviewing similar reports from other companies, PPL posted its first sustainability report online in October 2006 to limit printed copies, thereby conserving paper and ink. Using the Web provides an easy-to-navigate forum and a way to continually update the information as new figures become available. In addition, PPL made a PDF copy of the 2006 report for archive purposes and printed a limited number of 2006 summary reports.

Once a draft of the 2006 report was written, Ceres helped PPL evaluate it according to the reporting guidelines. The report incorporated many of the comments from Ceres. Other comments we received, both from inside PPL and from external reviewers, were assessed for future reports.

For 2007, PPL has updated its online Responsibility Report with current information. A draft of the 2007 report was submitted to Ceres for review by a group of external stakeholders, and we addressed some of their suggestions. The 2007 report is available online and in PDF format. No printed summary report will be issued in 2007.

PPL continues to refine and improve its sustainability reporting process. In 2008, PPL plans to issue a completely new Corporate Responsibility Report based on the Global Reporting Initiative G-3 performance indicators and their new Electric Utility Sector Supplement guidelines.

PPL believes stewardship contributes to our overall business success and is pleased to present its 2007 Corporate Responsibility Report.
