PPL's Western Power Distribution (WPD) in the United Kingdom has earned nearly $1 million in awards from the U.K.'s chief electricity regulator for the company's exemplary service to vulnerable customers and its social responsibility programs.

WPD earned the awards from the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem). In making these awards for the first time, Ofgem commended WPD for its “breadth, depth and holistic approach” to community support.

The majority of WPD's award was in recognition of the company's programs for serving vulnerable customers, defined as the elderly, the disabled or people suffering from long-term illness. The remainder of the award was for social responsibility initiatives such as volunteer work performed by the company's apprentices in support of local schools and community organizations.

Among all of the community outreach activities conducted by WPD in England and Wales:

  • Sponsored a toy library at the Ty Hafan hospice for children in Wales.
  • Donated costumes for children to use in historical workshops involving the SS Great Britain, a Victorian Era steamship.
  • Sponsored a soccer club in Swansea, Wales, for children and young adults with physical or learning disabilities.
  • Donated life jackets to the Severn Area Rescue Association, the largest independent water-rescue organization in the U.K.
  • Underwrote the cost of delivering a booklet to 250,000 homes with advice and support for children on how to stop bullying.
  • Donated VHF radios to a search and rescue station.
