PPL installs solar panels on two Macy’s department stores

Solar power installations on the roofs of two Macy’s department stores in New Jersey are the latest additions to PPL’s growing renewable energy fleet.

The 3,750 solar panels produce more than 750 kilowatts of electricity — enough to power 80 average houses. They are owned by PPL and the electricity is sold to Macy’s.

PPL plans to invest $100 million in renewable energy projects over the next five years. It’s part of the company’s longstanding commitment to generating electricity in an environmentally responsible manner.

“These two solar facilities will produce electricity cleanly and efficiently,” said Paul T. Champagne, president of PPL’s Energy Services Group. “To make the same amount of electricity with fossil fuels would generate about 700 tons per year of greenhouse gases.”

PPL’s renewable energy subsidiary has 10 renewable energy facilities in operation that provide more than 18 megawatts of electricity. That’s enough to power nearly 15,000 homes. Several other projects are in construction and under development. These profitable projects not only generate clean and renewable energy that contribution to reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, but they also generate valuable renewable energy credits for PPL.

The New Jersey Macy’s stores with the new solar installations are in Jersey City, near the entrance to the Holland Tunnel, and in Mays Landing near Atlantic City.

PPL also has built solar energy projects at two other sites in New Jersey.
