PPL's partnership programs help communities prepare for growth and attract other public and private sources of funding for projects. Programs have included:
Feasibility studies for industrial site development.
- Access to professional development and accreditation for staff members at local economic development organizations.
- Interest subsidies and loans for speculative buildings and industrial parks to help create jobs.
- Marketing incentives for economic development organizations.
One example of PPL's success in creating partnerships is our work with CAN DO, a nonprofit economic development organization established in the 1950s to diversify the economy and create job opportunities in the Hazleton area of northeastern Pennsylvania following the decline of anthracite production after World War II.
PPL became involved with a group of civic and business leaders looking to improve economic conditions. The group adopted the name CAN DO, which stands for Community Area New Development Organization, after being told by local banker, “You can't do it.” Since 1956, CAN DO has attracted more than 20,000 jobs and millions of dollars to northeastern Pennsylvania by bringing companies to its industrial parks and corporate center. |
