PPL subsidiary honored by Environmental Protection Agency

A PPL Corporation subsidiary’s renewable energy work was named a “Project of the Year” by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

PPL Energy Services partnered with the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and Turkey Hill Dairy to design and build a 3.2-megawatt methane-to-energy power generation system in Manor Township, Pa.

It’s just one project under the company’s commitment to invest $100 million in renewable energy over the next five years.

The authority provides methane gas daily from its Frey Farm and Creswell landfills to PPL, which uses the gas to power two generators. PPL then sells the power to PJM Interconnection, which operates the electricity transmission grid in this region. Power from the landfill produces enough energy to supply 2,000 homes.

In addition, PPL provides heat, which is a byproduct of the process, to the adjacent Turkey Hill Dairy. The heat provides Turkey Hill with about 85 percent of the thermal needs of its operations, saving about 240,000 gallons of diesel fuel.

The award was presented in January 2007 in Baltimore during the EPA’s 10th Annual Landfill Methane Outreach Program Partner and Project of the Year Awards Ceremony.
