In the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, which devastated a large area of the U.S. Gulf Coast in August 2005, PPL and its employees donated $513,000 to the American Red Cross. PPL agreed to match every employee contribution in a 2-to-1 ratio.

In addition to the fundraising effort for hurricane relief, PPL Electric Utilities sent more than 200 of its employees to Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas to help rebuild electric distribution systems and restore electric service to communities affected by hurricanes Rita and Katrina.

In February 2005, PPL and its employees donated $135,000 to the Red Cross for relief to the victims of the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004.

Emel, PPL's electric distribution affiliate in Chile, helped restore electric service and rebuild shattered small communities in northern Chile after an earthquake June 13, 2005. The earthquake measured 7.9 on the Richter scale. Emel donated 40 prefabricated homes for families who lost their homes to the earthquake and contributed funds to purchase construction materials.
