Indirect Effects of Business Operations
PPL provides significant indirect benefits in the communities it serves through employee volunteerism, charitable giving, and economic and community development.
PPL's partnership programs help communities prepare for growth and attract other public and private sources of funding for projects. Programs have included:
- Feasibility studies for industrial site development.
- Access to professional development and accreditation for staff members at local economic development organizations.
- Interest subsidies and loans for industrial parks and industrial buildings to help create jobs.
- Marketing incentives for economic development organizations.
Corporate Philanthropy
PPL supports the communities through donations from the company and employees.
The corporate Public and Charitable Contributions budget has grown from $1.4 million in 2001 to $3.8 million in 2006. These dollars go to nonprofit organizations that support community and social needs.
Montana Community Fund
PPL Montana established a Montana Community Fund grant program to support the communities where it does business. Under the direction of a statewide advisory board composed of community, business and government representatives from throughout the state, as well as PPL Montana employees, PPL Montana has awarded $500,000 to 80 community organizations across Montana since 2005. We envision that the grants — each ranging from $1,000 to $10,000 — will improve the quality of education, enhance the environment and bring jobs and new tax revenues to Montana through improved economic development.
Partners for Development
PPL has a staff of community relations professionals that support company operations in Pennsylvania. These professionals play vital roles as community leaders and enable PPL to be involved with key local issues such as development of open space, well-managed growth and educational quality.
PPL has a Web site (www.ppleconomicdevelopment.com) that includes a searchable database of available industrial and office properties in the Pennsylvania communities it serves.
PPL hosts forums that enable local agencies to share best practices in economic development and hear from leaders in the public and private sector about current topics in land use, conservation, marketing and development.
U.K. Charitable Foundation
Western Power Distribution established a charitable foundation in 1996 under which registered charities may receive grants from the company. The foundation enables WPD to support good causes that may otherwise fall outside the themes of the company's community support policy.
In 2006, WPD’s foundation made donations of £87,700 (about $155,000) to organizations in southwest England and south Wales. In addition, WPD provided £89,000 (about $180,000) to community organizations to support education, safety and environmental initiatives.
Latin American Charitable Foundations
PPL subsidiaries in Chile and Bolivia have charitable foundations. In addition, each year the two companies donate food packages to underprivileged families on Christmas Eve as part of Mision Noche Buena.
In 2006, Elfec in Bolivia gave the equivalent of $9,300, including $2,500 for Mision Noche Buena. Emel in Chile gave $76,000, including $48,000 for the Mision Noche Buena.
