Flying WILD: Exploring Birds, People and the Environment

Wednesday, October 21, 2009
8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
Holtwood Environmental Center, Lancaster County
9 New Village Rd., Holtwood, PA 17532
Presented by: Theresa Alberici, Pennsylvania Game Commission
Birds are cool. They come in all different shapes, colors and sizes and, though they are wild animals, we can generally see them every day. Birds offer unique opportunities for students to conduct real-world observations and research while exploring environmental concepts and issues.
Educators and school administrators are invited to join the Pennsylvania Game Commission and PPL to discover the world of birds with Flying WILD, a national curriculum supplement that addresses bird biology and conservation topics and issues ranging from adaptations to migration to research.
The Flying WILD workshop features natural history, bird identification, migration and other ecological concepts, addresses issues here in Pennsylvania and around the world, and includes hands-on activities that help meet state environment and ecology educational standards.
The workshop has classroom and outdoor activities, so dress for the weather and bring binoculars if you have them. Participants will receive the Flying WILD guide and an introduction to the state Game Commission’s new online bird sighting reporting opportunity called eBird. Refreshments and lunch will be provided by PPL.
