Energy Education
The more knowledgeable educators and their students are, the better they will be able to deal with how society views vital energy issues. Among PPL's energy education programs are:
- Let's Get Real. This program provides students an opportunity to apply their problem-solving skills to real-life business situations. PPL partners with other businesses to support this program. Corporate co-sponsors supply real problems and each student team submits solutions in a business format. Problems could involve environmental issues, manufacturing, distribution, software creation, human resources, health and safety, facilities design or marketing. Because this is a Web-based competition, it is open to grades 6-12 across the nation. See www.lgreal.org for more details.
- Electrical Safety Poster Contest. Through this competition PPL works closely with schools and communities to increase student learning and awareness about electrical safety. All grand-prize-winning posters are featured on PPL's electrical safety poster calendar, which is distributed to all participating schools. The calendar reinforces PPL's electrical safety message throughout the year. It is open to grades K-8 throughout PPL's electric delivery service area. Around 6,000 students take part in the contest each year. Click here for information about this year's contest.
- Nuclear Energy Seminar for Teachers. This program provides educators from grades K-12 with information about basic energy concepts; risks and benefits of various energy sources; the fundamentals of nuclear power; related and controversial nuclear power issues; and operation of PPL's Susquehanna nuclear plant. The course is taught using on-site facilities at the Susquehanna nuclear plant, and PPL provides resource materials and technical expertise to help teachers develop their own teaching strategies. More than 1,000 area educators have participated in the course.
- Partners Newsletter. PPL's Partners newsletter provides information and resources for more than 6,000 educators at all U.S. locations where PPL has facilities. Please note that the programs described in the newsletter may not be available outside of PPL's primary markets.
