2004 - Winners selected in PPL’s electrical safety poster contest
"Sammy’s House of Hazards" drew nearly 7,000 entries this year in PPL Corporation’s electrical safety poster contest for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Sammy, a lovable dinosaur, is PPL’s electrical safety mascot for the school program.
"Now in its 18th consecutive year, PPL’s electrical safety poster contest is still the premiere activity for students at the start of the school year," said Larry Sparta, PPL’s education relations director.
In 1986, the poster contest had a modest beginning with only about 2,000 students participating, Sparta said. Since then it has been an enormous success with educators and students. An all-time high was reached in 1998 when 9,980 student posters were entered.
"The contest is the centerpiece of our public outreach about electrical safety awareness," Sparta added. "The number of entries shows educators understand the importance of teaching life skills to youngsters.
"Each year the largest number of posters are entered by students in the intermediate grades levels, grades 3-5," he noted. "Educators tell us that age group is most receptive to our safety message. This shows we are not only getting good quantitative results, but also we are getting the qualitative results we want because we are reaching the right students."
Electrical safety in and around the home was the focus of the students’ artwork. They used crayons, pencils, paints or computer-generated graphics to depict their electrical safety messages.
A team that included PPL representatives and an art teacher from the Allentown School District judged the posters and selected 33 winners in 12 grade-level categories. Winning students receive shares of PPL Corporation stock.
The 12 grand-prize-winning student posters will be highlighted on PPL’s 2004 electrical safety poster calendar. Calendars will be mailed to participating schools in early January 2004.
