Inaugural Atlantic Salmon Spawning Run 15K Race

The Inaugural Atlantic Salmon Spawning Run 15K Race on April 29 will help raise funds for the Penobscot River Restoration Project, which will restore the natural flow of Maine's largest watershed.

Funds raised during the 15K race, which is sponsored by PPL Maine and the Penobscot Unified Salmon Clubs of Veazie, Penobscot and Eddington, will go to the Penobscot River Restoration Trust.

The race will begin in Veazie, Maine and end in Eddington, Maine.

The restoration project is part of an agreement between PPL Corporation and a group of government agencies, private groups and the Penobscot Indian Nation to improve access to over 500 miles of river habitat for Atlantic salmon and other migratory species.

Under the agreement, the coalition would pay PPL about $25 million to purchase three of the company’s dams in Maine and then either remove or bypass the dams to help restore runs of the fish to the Penobscot River. PPL would get the right to increase energy output at its six remaining dams in Maine.

For more information or to register for the race, contact Lou Horvath, Event Director, at 207-989-5370 or asboth1@aol.com.
