December 12, 2010 - Cold Shower
Welcome to the Nature Notebook.

Look, up in the sky! It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s a meteor! From tonight through next Sunday, Earth will experience a meteor shower. This is the annual Geminid meteor shower. Many skywatchers consider this meteor shower to be the best of the year. The Geminids often produce up to 60 multicolored meteors per hour at their peak. This year that peak will take place on Monday night and into the early morning hours of Tuesday. Some Geminid meteors are visible before and after the peak. You can start watching the sky between 9 and 10 p.m. on Monday, although the moon interferes with viewing at that time. The best viewing will be after midnight when the waxing moon has set. Look toward the eastern sky. Don’t forget to bundle up and stay warm for this cold shower.
