Wetlands

The wetlands, a series of four ponds, may look as though nature created them a long time ago. In fact, they are one of PPL’s proudest habitat restoration projects.

The site was excavated by a sand and gravel company. When the quarry closed in 1975, groundwater seeped into the depressions in the earth. The groundwater had high levels of iron, making the ponds unsuitable for most wildlife. PPL brought in anti-acidic materials, including soil rich in lime, to return the water to normal.
