1940s 
- Pennsylvania Power & Light prepares for divestiture from National Power & Light Co. By 1947, the company has a new ownership structure of more than 70,000 stockholders.
- In 1948, "the storm of the century" hits the Lehigh Valley with a sheath of ice. More than 800 Pennsylvania Power & Light employees from all departments work ’round-the-clock to restore power to 90,000 customers in a five-day battle with the storm.
- The Edison Electric Illuminating Co. of Sunbury, grows from an inventor’s dream in 1883 to the Sunbury Steam Electric Station, the most modern, state-of-the-art generating station in Pennsylvania and the world’s largest anthracite-fired coal plant. It is the first Pennsylvania Power & Light plant to use a direct-firing system in the boilers.
- Pennsylvania Power & Light's efforts to diversify the economy of the anthracite region begin in earnest. Over the next 17 years, a total of 750 industries are encouraged to locate in the region, creating more than 56,000 job opportunities for residents.
